These are pivotal times – we know so much needs to change and it can seem a little overwhelming. What keeps us energized at Hanover Action is doing what we can with others in our community.

It can be frustrating that cuts to council services mean that it is really hard to get trees planted locally (even when we raise the money!) – but we will work around and with others.

Of course, the City Clean contract is maddening and too much of our recycling incinerated – but we are keen to build on peoples’ desire to pass on unwanted household stuff, and looking for help from others who are interested. So – what about a sheltered book and other swap area in the Southover Street recycling area?

Last year, Hanover Action was instrumental in the council’s declaring “global climate and biodiversity emergency.” This year we will be holding our Councilors to account and working to ensure that Brighton & Hove’s forthcoming Citizens Assembly is radical, powerful and transformative.

Would you like to know more about the potential for “modal filtering”, Home Zones and other ideas to make our streets cleaner, greener and safer? We are definitely up for a debate about more secure bike parking and the siting – and use of – of communal bins.

Join us – you can sign up by visiting our website where you can find out more about living sustainably or come along to our regular meetings (every 3rd Tuesday at the Hanover Centre) or come to one of our open events. Our Annual Seed and Plant Swap is always a good place to meet and share ideas. We will also be working with the Communities Forum for Hanover & Elm Grove to put on a sustainability event to showcase ideas for better insulation, heat pumps and other green initiatives.

And, as always, we are always keen to promote Street Parties as the best way to meet your neighbors – it’s a lot easier to do than you might think.

All the best for 2020!
